Frequently Asked Questions about Account Opening

Answers to common questions about personal banking in Georgia, from documents and fees to bank benefits and legal considerations.

General Information

Who can open a current account in Georgia?

People of many nationalities may apply. Each bank reviews eligibility, identity and compliance information individually, including any applicable restrictions.

Which bank can I open an account with?

Our personal banking assistance can include an application for SOLO, Bank of Georgia’s premium banking service. The bank makes its own decision about the application and account offering.

Can account opening be guaranteed?

No. The bank may decline an application following its own review. Georgia Freedom helps prepare accepted cases, but cannot guarantee approval. If a case we accept does not result in an account being opened, our service fee is refunded in full in accordance with our agreed terms.

Is there a minimum deposit amount?

We do not set a minimum opening deposit. Any minimum required for a particular bank product should be confirmed against the bank’s current terms.

Is there a monthly minimum deposit?

We do not require a monthly deposit. Check the bank’s current account conditions for any balance or activity requirements.

Will my account be closed if I don't use it for a while?

Inactivity alone does not guarantee that an account will remain open. Keep any bank fees paid and your contact and compliance information current; the bank’s account terms and review policies apply.

Can I transfer money from my Georgian account to Russia?

Transfers depend on the bank’s current policies, the recipient bank, payment network and applicable sanctions and compliance checks. Ask the bank to confirm whether a specific transfer is permitted before sending it.

What benefits does SOLO travel insurance offer?

Travel cover may include medical emergencies and certain baggage or travel disruptions. Coverage, exclusions, limits and eligibility depend on the card and the bank’s current insurance policy; review the policy before travelling.

Does SOLO offer lounge access at airports?

The SOLO banking package described on our Personal Banking page includes unlimited complimentary LoungeKey lounge access for eligible cardholders. Guest privileges, participating lounges and other conditions depend on the card and the bank’s current terms.

How does the LoungeKey app work?

Eligible cardholders can use the app to check participating lounges and the entry requirements for their card. The lounge may ask to see a boarding pass and an eligible card or digital credential.

What does Fast Track mean with SOLO?

Eligible SOLO cards in the banking package described on our Personal Banking page include unlimited complimentary Fast Track at participating airports. Airports, availability and usage conditions can change; check the current card benefits before travelling.

Can I bring guests into the lounge?

Some card packages allow guests, sometimes with a limited number of complimentary entries. Guest eligibility and charges depend on the lounge programme and current card terms.

How long can I stay in the lounge?

Each lounge sets its own stay limit, often a few hours. Check the participating lounge’s conditions in the relevant programme app before your visit.

Are there any additional fees beyond the annual account maintenance fee?

Yes, depending on how you use the account and the application route. Our assistance fee, notarisation, transfers, card services or other bank charges may be separate. We explain known fees in your written proposal; the bank’s published tariff controls its own charges.

How high are the currency exchange fees?

The rate and any conversion charge depend on the currency pair, transaction and bank tariff at the time of exchange. Compare the bank’s live quote and total amount received with other providers before confirming a conversion.

Can I get an American Express card?

A SOLO Amex Debit card may be available with eligible packages. Credit card eligibility is assessed separately by the bank; ask for the current offer applicable to your circumstances.

What do international transfers from Georgia to Germany cost?

A standard SWIFT transfer has been quoted at around €15 and a full-charge option at around €45; transfers within Bank of Georgia may be free in some cases. These figures are indicative only: verify the live bank tariff, currencies and intermediary charges before sending.

What is the limit on the Visa & Mastercard debit cards?

A debit card uses the available balance in its linked account, subject to the bank’s daily transaction, cash withdrawal and security limits. It does not provide a credit line.

Documents & Procedure

What documents are required to open an account?

The remote route may involve a notarised and, where required, apostilled passport copy and power of attorney, plus any Georgian translations the bank requires. For an in-person application, requirements may differ. The bank may request further identity, KYC or source-of-funds documents.

What is a Hague Apostille and why is it needed?

An apostille authenticates the origin of certain public documents for use in another country under the Hague Apostille Convention. Whether one is needed depends on the document and receiving institution.

What is a bank power of attorney and why is it needed?

For an eligible remote application, a limited power of attorney can authorise a representative to handle specified steps in Georgia. Its scope, duration and any authority over an account are set by the actual document; they must not be assumed from a general description.

How long does account opening take?

A visit of approximately three days is often planned for an in-person route. A remote route may take around two weeks. Both are estimates and depend on documents, delivery and the bank’s independent review.

What is an online notary?

A notarial service that may verify identity and notarise eligible documents by video, subject to the rules in the relevant jurisdiction. We can coordinate a suitable provider where the bank accepts that form of notarisation.

Costs & Fees

What does in-person account opening assistance cost?

Our fee for the Visit Georgia assistance route is €895. Travel and accommodation and any applicable bank or other third-party charges are separate; we confirm the scope and known costs before you pay.

What does the online notary cost?

Our current quoted third-party cost for the online notary and apostille route is approximately €150, subject to the documents and provider used. It is separate from our base service fee; we confirm the amount before proceeding.

What does remote account opening cost?

Our fee for remote application assistance is €695. Online notarisation and apostille cost approximately €150 extra. The bank’s annual package fee, currently 800 GEL, is paid directly to the bank. Any applicable delivery or other bank charges are separate; the bank confirms its current tariff.

What is included in the account opening price?

Our fee covers an initial case and document review, guidance on KYC information, application preparation and coordination with the bank. Depending on the route agreed, we also help arrange a branch visit or coordinate the authorised representative process and related communication. The bank performs the account-opening and approval process.

What is not included in the account opening price?

Bank account maintenance and transaction fees, third-party notary and apostille charges, document delivery and other costs not expressly included in your written service terms are separate. We clarify the expected charges before you proceed.

Account Opening Process

How does the account opening process work?

We first review your situation and the proposed route, then agree the service scope and fee. We help prepare KYC information and coordinate either a branch visit in Georgia or, where available, a remote application through an authorised representative. The bank independently reviews the application; any account setup and card delivery follow its approval and procedures. Please do not send passports through the public contact form.

What happens to the original documents?

Document handling depends on the bank and the application route. Some originals or certified copies may be kept in the bank’s records. We can confirm the relevant handling and return arrangements for your case before submission.

How do my new bank cards reach me?

Card collection or delivery is arranged according to the bank’s rules and eligible destination. We can coordinate the next steps after approval; international shipping availability and cost must be confirmed with the bank.

Can one of the bank cards be issued in my partner's or child's name?

Additional cardholders may be possible, subject to the bank’s product rules, identity checks and any age requirements. We can ask the bank what is available for your family.

Security & Legal Questions

How safe is my money at a bank in Georgia?

Georgian banks operate under local banking regulation, and eligible deposits have statutory insurance up to the applicable limit. Banking always involves risks. A Georgian account does not remove a customer’s legal or tax obligations in other countries.

What is the deposit guarantee in Georgia per account?

As of April 2026, the Georgian deposit insurance limit is 50,000 GEL per depositor per bank, across that depositor’s eligible accounts at the same institution. It is not a separate 50,000 GEL limit for every account.

Can German / European authorities view or freeze my account in Georgia?

They do not directly administer accounts at Georgian banks. Information exchange and requests involving a Georgian account may nevertheless be possible under applicable reporting rules, international agreements and legal procedures. An account abroad is not exempt from lawful obligations.

What is CRS (Common Reporting Standard)?

CRS is a framework for financial institutions and tax authorities to exchange information about certain financial accounts held by people or entities tax-resident in another participating jurisdiction. Banks ask account holders to disclose all applicable tax residences.

Will my account in Georgia automatically be reported to Germany?

That depends on your actual tax residency, the bank’s due diligence, the account and applicable exchange arrangements. Merely registering a Georgian correspondence address does not prevent CRS reporting to Germany if you are tax-resident there.

Can I be exempt from CRS exchange?

Reporting depends on the relevant tax residence and account classification rules. Changing an address or opening an account in Georgia alone does not change your tax residency. Disclose all tax residences accurately and seek qualified tax advice for your circumstances.

What information is exchanged under CRS?

Reportable information can include the account holder’s identity and tax residence, account number, reporting institution, year-end balance or value, and certain income such as interest. The precise fields depend on the account and rules.

When does the CRS data exchange take place?

CRS reporting and exchange generally occur annually, on dates set by the relevant jurisdictions. The timing for any particular account depends on the reporting year and applicable local rules.

Is CRS the same as FATCA?

No. CRS is a multilateral reporting standard; FATCA is a separate US reporting regime. Depending on the account holder and institution, one or both sets of rules may be relevant.

Does CRS also apply to companies?

Yes, entity accounts can fall within CRS. The reporting treatment depends on the entity’s classification and tax residence and may also require information about certain controlling persons.
